Want to write around?

Well, this site had a brake for about two weeks. There are a few reasons, and I want to tell my readers which are they and how am I planning to fix that.

Part 1 – The Exams

As you might, or might not know, I am a student on University of Zagreb here in Croatia. I’m on my final year in college now, and if everything goes well, I will have bachelor’s degree somewhere in summer/fall this year.

Because of that I have to know my priorities. College is my first priority, and during past few weeks, I have had some exams that needed to be solved, and here I am now :)

Part 2 – Technical stuff

Also, there were some troubles with the hosting company of this blog, so I decided to change it. While you’re reading this, everything is going smooth on new servers with a new hosting company, but there are still some sites that need to be transferred to their new home.

Well now, since you know why there were no new posts, I can move to the final part of this announcement - authors.

Authors wanted!

As I mentioned – I’m a student with a few exams away from my degree. So, from now on (until the summer) I will not be able to give too much amount of time to my blogging activities, including LOL Gadgets blog. So, with this post I am looking for potential authors for this blog. Things would work something like this:

you contact me by mail (info@lolgadgets.com) or by contact form

I create an account for you

you write posts

I schedule them for publishing

We’re happy :)

Notice that there would be no payment, since everything here is based on a good will, yours and mine. This blog is run by a single person, and there is no big blogging networks behind it (for now ;) )

So – if you would like to work with me on this site, or you know somebody who would like that – please, let me know. I’d really appreciate it.

Well, this is epic. Hello Kitty gadgets in two parts, for all you geekettes out there! There is no possible way that you could missed that little cute japan-kitty, even if you lived under a rock. Hello Kitty is definitely the icon of these ages, so let’s se, what gadgets you can get with your favorite kitten.

Hello Kitty Laptop

Nice, an Epson “Hello Kitty” laptop. It has 12,1″ LCD screen, Celeron M423 processor, 512 MB of RAM and 40 GB hard drive, all for ~1115 pounds. [source]

Hello Kitty Wacom tablet

I think that this would be a perfect gift for some graphic designer. It’s a Wacom graphic tablet, but ofcourse, in “Hello Kitty” edition. Great :) [source]

Hello Kitty Counter Strike

Who says that girls can’t play FPS and love Hello Kitty in the same time? I personally know a girl who does exactly that, she is a big fan of Hello Kitty, but she will also kick your arse in Counter Stike. And if you get on this map…you’re doomed. [source]

Hello Kitty Guitar

For all of you Avril Lavigne’s out there, Hello Kitty guitar! There are also some Hello Kitty amplifiers available. [source]

Hello Kitty keyboard cleaner

Keyboards are the thing that gets dirty very easily. Hair, dust, breadcrumbs and stuff like that can be a nightmare to clean. But this Hello Kitty cleaner should help ;) [source]

Thanks to Hermione for submitting this gadget! Would you also like to submit one?

Yeah, we have a brand new look! The old one was good, but…

First of all, it was temporary. We wanted to start with this blog ASAP, and we didn’t had much time to focus on design. So, we installed that one, which served us well for almost a month now. This one better suits our needs, so – here it is.

There are some new stuff that we like, and we think that you will love too. The homepage is now more compact. The thing we think that will help this blog to become more popular are the little social buttons inside every post, which allows You to easily share the joy of a certain LOL Gadget on Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Delicious and StumbleUpon.

And there is one new thing to mention – except design – you can now add you own LOL Gadgets that you found somewhere online! You just fill out the submission form, and we’ll get notified about it. Once we approve that gadget, we’ll publish it, you’ll get notification about it and full credit for finding it.

That way you are directly helping us and you’re becoming a part of this blog.

Well, we hope you’ll enjoy in this. GL&HF!

Wrong disc in drive? Not.

And just when you thought that you will never deal with floppy discs again, they managed to surprise you. Personally, I rarely use CDs anymore, because DVDs are very cheap, USB flash drives also, Internet is practically unlimited with it’s file transfer technologies, so why bother working with something that’s less than 1 GB in size?

But you can’t argue with retro stuff. Retro is always in. And this proves it – CD in a shape of a floppy disc. If you would like to own one, go to Design Boom.

No comment. Just try it.

This post is going to be a little different that the others. It has been a really nice day for me in the gadget-sense of way.

You might have noticed in some posts that I am an Apple lover. And that’s true. I love Apple, I love their products and I would like to have them all one day. But I’m a PC user :(

But a few days ago, some of my friends convinced me that I should buy the Apple keyboard. I’ve heard so much good things about it, so eventually I said to myself – ah, why not. And I ordered me one wired Apple Keyboard.

Today in the morning I was awakened by a telephone call from the delivery man, saying that he is in front of my apartment and has a package for me. I quickly got out of bed and went for my new keyboard.

So – here are my impressions of it.

Pros

The keyboard is very thin. Keys also. So all together, you have a feeling like you’re typing on a table, instead on keyboard. And what I especially like is that keys are very silent, probably more silent than on some laptops.

No more win key. Instead – the cmd key does that function.

Caps lock key – oh, this is just great! I’m not so sure (time will tell), but I think that there is no way of accidentally turning it on. To turn on the caps lock, you need to press it for a little (and I mean really little) time. We’re talking about quarter of a second here. So great, and so sad that Windows keyboards don’t have that same function, but you need to install additional plugins or what not to recognize accidentally turned on caps lock.

This keyboard is made out of aluminum, so it’s pretty hard and massive. Something like typing on a laptop, but without that plastic-squeaking noise.

Cable length. I got an extension cord for my keyboard, and now I can finally take the keyboard in my lap and write, while the old keyboard didn’t have enough cable to reach the edge of the table :(

It has two USB ports, one on each side. These ports are here actually for you to plug in your mouse in the, or bluetooth dongle or some other USB cable, that will stay pluged in there. It’s not meant to be a place where you will plug in your memory sticks, so stop complaining about that. My MP3 player is thicker than the keyboard itself – and if Apple wanted me to plug my MP3 into the keyboard, the would make it large and thick. This is much better.

Cons

Print screen function is gone. There is no way that you capture a screen in Windows with this keyboard. But…
Did you know how easy it is for Mac OS users to capture a screen, active window of anything else they pick with their mouse? No? Well… let me just say that it’s years ahead of any other OS. So, this actually makes you to install a screen-grabbing application to capture a screen. It’s too bad that Windows need additional programs for that.
But on the other hand, when you install that application, you can assign key combinations to it just like they are on a Mac OS, so – you will get more features that ordinary PrtScr key, plus – you’ll be a step closer to Mac ;)

PrintScreen, Eject and much more on Apple Keyboard with Windows

UPDATE (Jan 15, 2009): Lucikly, my friend fichek helped me out through this one. It is possible to have PrintScreen on Apple Keyboard. All you need to do is to install BootCamp on your Windows (complete instalation for now), uninstall everything except BootCamp Services and Apple Keyboard drivers and that’s it! Your PrintScreen will now be on F14 button. One more great thing is that Eject and mute and volume up/down buttons are also functionable now! And that’s not all… ;)
If you look at this screenshot here, you can clearly see that when you use those buttons, on your screen will appear that nice visual effect like on Mac OS or iPod/iPhone.

So, after installing BootCamp, it looks like that this keyboard doesn’t have anything for “con” category ;)

Conclusion

So – to end this text – In my opinion, this keyboard is worth every cent I gave. And I strongly suggest that if you also need a new keyboard – give this one a chance, it won’t dissapoint you. Know this – if PrintScreen and USB ports are ONLY reasons why you don’t want this keyboard, than you’re just a big whingner, get real.

Almost forgot – you can see some photos of my keyboard on my flickr account here.

These last few days here in Europe were (and still are) pretty cold. Yes, it’s winter, but still. It’s cold.

Momentarily, my hands are very cold and I really would like to have some of the gadgets here on list. Check them out! and guess what? They are all USB-powered, so the geek-factor is here :)

Warming mouse

I’m not sure how much would this be of use to me, but mouse that has warming surface seems like a pretty idea. I would definitely try it out, but I don’t think I would be comfortable holding something like that in my palm…don’t know why, I just think that way I guess.

Warming slippers

Now this is something different! You know that times when you are in a warm room, but your feet are somehow cold? Doctors would say that you have problems with your blood circulation, but not us! We say – you need USB-powered warming slippers! You just plug them into your USB ports (luckily, they are on the back of your computer-case, and they are empty, because you use ones in the front :) ) and that’s it. In a few moments, your slippers will warm up and your feet will be thankful to you.

Warming hand-gloves

Same goes for your hands. Sometimes, they’re just cold and there is nothing that can warm them up. Nothing except these warming gloves (they’re also available for girls). You plug one into one USB port and another one in the other USB port and there you go! If you have a keyboard like this one (wired model), than you have USB port on each side, perfect for these gloves!

Warming mousepad

If you don’t fancy a pair of gloves, but your hands are still cold, try with this warming mousepad. You need to plug it into *guess what port* and it will start with warming up. Put your mouse inside, and there – you have your hand on a warm place.

Beverage Cup Cooler and Warmer

Okay, now that we have every part of us warmed up, we want to drink something hot. But who would really want to get AFK for a cup of tea? Nobody. So, in the morning, make yourself few cups of your favourite hot bevragem and if it gets cold durng the day, just put it on this little warmer and you’ll have your hot drink again.

The year now is 2009. I got my first computer on January 17th, 1998 – I can still remember the whole day and the trip to Zagreb and how I felt. Few months later, somewhere in 1999 my father bought me an external, 56k modem. Oh those were the times. Everything was so slow, phone line was occupied, hang-ups occurred at least three times a day… But it was sweet.

I’m guessing that some of today’s Internet users don’t even know what I’m talking about here. Well kids, you’re lucky you got directly hooked on broadband. If you want to feel how things were 10 years ago, then check out this 56k modem emulator, or take a look at some of those videos here.

Japanese really can produce some cool and very usefull stuff, but then there’s the other kind of their products. No hard feelings anyone, but I think that we all agree that they can create and produce something that’s way out of what we would call – a normal way of thinking. Let’s see, what do we have here…

MUJI cardboard speakers

Okay, this is not such a lame idea, actually. Speakers in a cardboard. Take them with you, use them, recycle (or what ever) them. They look like they will explode on a little louder tone, but at least then you won’t need to take them back home. Off course, don’t expect to get any lower sounds on this speakers.

Ear Wax Camera/Cleaner

Do you clean your ears regularly? I do that every morning. But you know what happens when you don’t do that? Your ears than produce some kind of yellow sticky mass, something not so nice. Well, if you have $90 that you don’t need – get this nice camera, put one end in your ear and watch all the flora that’s creating inside.

The Head Bath Cap

What? Head bath cap?! Use your hands people, not caps! Although, I’d like to try how it feels to have this on my head, and filled with water. Bigbrained, I guess :)

Kuma Phone Teddy Bear

Yes, it’s a bear-phone or phone-bear, if you wish. This stuffed animal can accept SIM cards in it, so you can use it as a mobile phone. His paws are your speed-dials, one number per paw – and to activate it, you need to pinch his paw. Answering and ending the call is controlled by his tail. But for $500,00 – which is the price of this bear, it could be a little more prettier.

Automatic door (YouTube link)

This is cool, but I don’t see the use of this doors. The sensors are pretty slow, but what picks me the most is – why? Why would you like to have a door which would open just to fit you? And imagine what could happen if this thing gets broken. One moment – you’re walking thru the door, next moment – PAF! – one door bar got broken and it just hit you in the face! Or somewhere lower…
